French referee François Letexier has been selected by UEFA to officiate the Euro 2024 final between Spain and England at Berlin's Olympiastadion. At 35 years old, Letexier is notably one of the youngest referees to oversee such a significant match. His appointments include three Euro 2024 games, including Spain's 4-1 victory over Georgia in the round of 16.
Letexier, who joined FIFA's international referees list seven years ago, has garnered attention for his minimal use of red cards, issuing only one in nine Champions League or Europa League games last season. His Euro 2024 performances have been marked by a cautious approach, with no penalty kicks awarded and no player dismissals. He issued 10 yellow cards, including one to Serbia's Aleksandar Mitrovic for simulation during a 0-0 draw with Denmark.
There have been no controversies involving video assistant referee (VAR) decisions in Letexier's matches, including the 2-2 draw between Albania and Croatia. The VAR specialist for the final will also be French, Jérôme Brisard.
The final's fourth official will be Szymon Marciniak of Poland, who officiated the 2022 World Cup final and the 2023 Champions League final, overseeing matches with notable stoppage-time decisions involving Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Newcastle.
Letexier's recent high-profile UEFA matches include overseeing Real Madrid's 3-3 draw with Manchester City in the Champions League quarterfinals and Bayer Leverkusen's 2-0 victory over Roma in the Europa League semifinals, as well as the season-opening Super Cup clash between Manchester City and Sevilla last August.
