UEFA has launched an investigation into England midfielder Jude Bellingham after a gesture he made following his late equaliser against Slovakia in Sunday's Euro 2024 last-16 match. The governing body stated it is examining a potential breach of conduct rules by Bellingham.
Bellingham was seen making a crotch-grabbing gesture toward the Slovakian bench after scoring an overhead kick in stoppage time. He clarified on social media that the gesture was an inside joke aimed at close friends present at the game, denying any intended disrespect towards Slovakia.
Should Bellingham be found in violation of UEFA's ethical conduct principles under article 11/2b, consequences could include a suspension, a fine, or both. This article mandates respect for ethical conduct, loyalty, integrity, and sportsmanship, and prohibits behavior deemed insulting or violating basic rules of decency.
Following England's 2-1 victory in extra time, securing a quarter-final clash with Switzerland, Bellingham responded to critics, stating, "You hear people talk a lot of rubbish. It's nice when you can deliver and give them a little bit back."
Previously, Bellingham made a similar gesture while playing for Real Madrid and after scoring a late equaliser for England in a friendly against Belgium earlier this year. Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Simeone were fined by UEFA in separate incidents for similar gestures in 2019.
Analysts suggest a fine is probable rather than a suspension for Bellingham, pending UEFA's investigation and Slovakia's perspective on the incident.
