Albania's Mirlind Daku has been handed a two-game ban by UEFA following his involvement in nationalist chants during the European Championship. UEFA cited these actions as detrimental to the sport's reputation.
The incident occurred after Albania's 2-2 draw with Croatia in Hamburg, where Daku used a megaphone to join fans in chants against Serbia and North Macedonia. This incident has underscored ongoing political tensions among Balkan nations participating in Euro 2024.
UEFA's disciplinary panel found Daku guilty of various charges, including failure to comply with conduct principles, violating decency rules, and bringing non-sporting elements into football. Additionally, the Albanian soccer federation has been fined €47,250 for incidents during the game, where fans reportedly chanted anti-Serb slogans.
The Serbian soccer federation threatened to withdraw from the tournament if UEFA failed to address these incidents promptly.
Despite issuing an apology on social media, UEFA has initiated further investigation into Daku's behavior. The 26-year-old forward, who switched eligibility from Kosovo to Albania under FIFA rules, expressed regret for his actions.
Albania, currently preparing for a crucial group-stage match against Spain, faces potential consequences should they advance. Daku would also miss a round of 16 game if Albania progresses.
The tournament has also seen UEFA charge both Albania and Croatia for potential racist and discriminatory fan conduct. Albania received fines for provocative messages, while Croatia was penalized for fan-related incidents involving fireworks.
