Belgium suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Slovakia in Group E of the European Championship on Monday, as two goals from Romelu Lukaku were overturned by video review.
Slovakia took an early lead in the seventh minute through forward Ivan Schranz, and managed to hold on despite numerous chances for Belgium's record scorer Lukaku. The Belgian striker had two goals disallowed in the second half; the first for offside following a VAR review, and the second due to a handball by Lois Openda before Lukaku's assist.
Slovakia's victory was safeguarded by a heroic goal-line clearance by defender David Hancko, who sustained a facial injury in the process from a teammate's knee in the 62nd minute.
Lukaku, who set a qualifying record with 14 goals last year, endured a frustrating first half marked by missed opportunities, including two before Slovakia's opener.
The match in Frankfurt unfolded amidst another upset earlier in the day, with Romania defeating Ukraine 3-0 in Munich.
The loss marks Belgium's first under coach Domenico Tedesco in 15 games, setting up a crucial fixture against Romania in Cologne on Saturday.
Slovakia, meanwhile, will face Ukraine in Dusseldorf next Friday.
