Aston Villa has finalized the acquisition of Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen for a transfer fee of £35 million.
Maatsen, 22, joined Borussia Dortmund on loan for the latter part of the previous season, contributing significantly to the Bundesliga club's journey to the Champions League final.
Currently, the defender is representing the Netherlands at Euro 2024 as they prepare for a last-16 match against Romania on Tuesday.
Maatsen is Villa's second signing of the summer, following the arrival of striker Lewis Dobbin from Everton.
Chelsea initially signed Maatsen in 2019 from PSV Eindhoven. Throughout his time at Chelsea, he had successful loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Burnley, and Dortmund.
Maatsen played a crucial role in Burnley's promotion to the Premier League in the 2022-23 season, scoring four goals in 39 appearances and earning a spot in the Championship Team of the Season.
Last season, Maatsen started at Chelsea but struggled to secure regular playing time under Mauricio Pochettino, appearing in 15 games across all competitions.
In January, Maatsen agreed to a six-month loan move to Dortmund after extending his contract with Chelsea until June 2026. The contract included a release clause that anticipated his departure this summer.
During his stint in Germany, Maatsen made 23 appearances and scored three goals, helping Dortmund finish fifth in the Bundesliga. They were runners-up in the Champions League, losing 2-0 to Real Madrid in the final.
Maatsen departs from Stamford Bridge having made 16 appearances for Chelsea.
In related news, Chelsea is nearing a deal for 18-year-old attacking midfielder Omari Kellyman from Aston Villa, with the transfer fee reportedly around £19 million.
