Manchester United's manager Erik ten Hag revealed that his summer holiday in Ibiza was unexpectedly interrupted when club management flew out to express their desire for him to continue in his role.
Speaking on Dutch TV channel NOS, Ten Hag recounted the surprise visit: "The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza. They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me."
Despite speculation about his future, Ten Hag's position was secured after he guided United to victory in the FA Cup final. The club, which finished eighth in the Premier League last season, opted to retain the Dutchman amid considerations that included talks with other candidates, including Thomas Tuchel.
"Manchester United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager," Ten Hag added.
The decision-making process involved discussions with Ineos, the club's new co-owner, who took their time to evaluate the season and explore various options. Despite the discussions, Ten Hag confirmed that negotiations for a new contract are ongoing.
"Manchester United and I still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This isn't easily done - we are still going to have to talk about this," he explained.
Ten Hag's debut season saw Manchester United finish third in the Premier League, reach the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals, and secure victory in the EFL Cup in 2023.
