Everton has turned down an initial offer of approximately £35 million from Manchester United for centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite. This bid falls significantly short of the £80 million valuation Everton places on the defender, who has also attracted interest from Arsenal regarding the availability of midfielder Amadou Onana.
While Manchester United has already agreed on personal terms with Branthwaite, Everton remains firm in their decision not to sell the 21-year-old. Branthwaite, regarded by many as a strong candidate for England's European Championship squad, is seen by Everton as a future England regular. The club rates him alongside players such as Harry Maguire, who joined United for £80 million in 2019, and Josko Gvardiol, who transferred to Manchester City for £77 million last summer.
Branthwaite's notable performances as a left-sided central defender have been crucial for Everton, especially in helping the club avoid relegation last season despite facing two points deductions for breaching financial loss limits.
Kevin Thelwell, Everton's director of football, stated in May that players "will be sold" this summer, urging fans to show "patience and understanding" as the club aims to improve its financial situation. However, it is understood that Everton would only consider selling 22-year-old Belgian midfielder Onana for an offer exceeding £50 million. Onana joined Everton from Lille for £33 million in 2022, and his participation in Euro 2024 with the Belgian national team could complicate any potential move.
With no Champions League football next season and current profit and sustainability rules in place, Manchester United is open to offers for almost all their first-team squad to generate funds and enhance Erik ten Hag's squad. United has placed a £40 million price tag on 24-year-old forward Jadon Sancho.
Following a two-week performance review, where Erik ten Hag was confirmed to stay as manager, United has identified central defense as a priority area for reinforcement. The club saw the departure of Raphael Varane after the FA Cup final, and injuries to Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof last season have highlighted the need for additional defensive strength. Veteran defender Jonny Evans, also plagued by injuries, is currently in discussions with the club regarding a new deal at the age of 36.
