Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has called on club captain Reece James to increase his influence and leadership within the team as they prepare for a crucial stretch in the Premier League.
James, who made his season debut last weekend in Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool following a lengthy injury, missed the squad’s UEFA Conference League match against Panathinaikos on Thursday. He is expected to play against Newcastle on Sunday, and Maresca has voiced his expectations for more visible leadership from the 23-year-old.
"I spoke with him and I expect from him more in terms of leadership inside the changing room," Maresca told reporters. "He’s on the way, he’s doing well, he’s progressing, but I expect more."
Maresca outlined his belief that captains need to take on greater responsibilities both on and off the pitch, explaining, "Most of the time, a player thinks that because I am captain I expect that you give me more. No, for me because you are the captain you have to give more. You have to give more than the rest. Sometimes, I am the captain I can give less? No, no, no."
After being appointed captain by former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, James has played only 12 matches for the club due to his injury setbacks. This limitation has meant his leadership role has largely been restricted to off-field interactions with teammates. During his absences last season, Conor Gallagher, who was recently transferred to Atletico Madrid, served as team leader for most matches.
Maresca noted the need for Chelsea to cultivate stronger leadership qualities among its players and that he has had constructive discussions with James regarding expectations. Known for his reserved personality, James is aware of the need for growth in this area, especially given his long-standing ties to the club’s academy.
"He's understanding that we're expecting more from him," Maresca said. "He's our guy from the academy. It's one of the reasons why he has to show more in terms of personality."
Reflecting on the overall state of leadership within the team, Maresca stated, "When you don't have a proper leader, you need to build that. I think we don't have a proper leader. We need to build them. Reece is one who is on the way, but he's not there. He needs to make an effort."
As Chelsea aims to rebuild its team structure, Maresca hopes James will fulfill his potential as captain, adding a stronger sense of guidance and accountability within the squad.
