Harry Kane marked his 100th cap for England with a brace, leading his team to a 2-0 victory over Finland in the Nations League on Tuesday at Wembley. The England captain netted both goals in the second half, highlighting his significant milestone in international football.
The 31-year-old is now the 10th player in England's history to reach 100 caps, joining the ranks of David Beckham and Bobby Moore. Kane’s two goals brought his total to 68 for the national team. He is only the third England player to score on their 100th appearance, following Wayne Rooney in 2014 and Bobby Charlton in 1970.
Peter Shilton holds the England record with 125 caps, while Rooney has the most caps for an outfield player with 120. Kane, who broke England’s goal-scoring record in March 2023, is expected to surpass both players in the near future.
In Tuesday's match, Kane scored his first goal in the 58th minute after receiving a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold. His powerful shot hit the underside of the crossbar before finding the back of the net. His second goal came in the 76th minute, following a precise cross from Noni Madueke, who made his debut in the match. Kane slotted the ball home from 12 yards out, sealing the win for England.
Kane’s children accompanied him onto the pitch before the game, and he was presented with a commemorative gold cap by former England players Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.
The match was also notable for England's interim manager, Lee Carsley, who secured his second win in charge. Carsley, who took over after Gareth Southgate’s resignation following the Euro 2024 final, led England to a 2-0 victory over Ireland in his debut match. Carsley has introduced a more attacking style compared to Southgate's approach, and his successful start has added intrigue to the discussion about who will be named the permanent manager.
In this game, Carsley gave Lille midfielder Angel Gomes his first start for the senior national team. Gomes made a solid contribution, while Chelsea winger Madueke set up Kane’s second goal. Carsley has worked with many of these players in his previous role as England Under-21 coach and has brought several into the senior squad.
England's next match will be against Greece in October as they continue their Nations League campaign.
