Liverpool have finalized the signing of Juventus winger Federico Chiesa for £10 million, with an additional £2.5 million available in performance-related add-ons. Chiesa, 26, has signed a four-year contract with Liverpool, marking Arne Slot's first acquisition as the club's manager.
Chiesa, who played a crucial role in Italy's Euro 2020 victory over England, expressed his excitement about joining Liverpool. "I'm so happy to be a Liverpool player. When Richard Hughes called me and he said, 'do you want to join Liverpool?' – and the coach called me – I said yes immediately because I know the history of this club, I know what it represents to the fans," Chiesa said on the club website.
During his debut season at Juventus, Chiesa was named in Serie A's Team of the Year but faced challenges following a significant knee injury in January 2022, which required surgery. Despite this setback, Chiesa scored 32 goals in 131 appearances for Juventus, including 10 goals in 37 matches last season.
Chiesa's exclusion from Juventus' first two matchday squads this season under new boss Thiago Motta, combined with his contract expiring next summer, led to his move. Liverpool boss Arne Slot had previously indicated that "it would be a surprise for all of us" if the club did not make any summer signings, emphasizing the high standards required to join "such a good squad."
In a related development, Liverpool have agreed to a £29 million deal to sign Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. However, Mamardashvili will not join Liverpool until next season.
