Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has signed a new contract with the club that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2027, with the option for an additional year. Fernandes, who joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million, has made 234 appearances, scoring 79 goals and providing 67 assists.
Fernandes’ previous contract, which was signed in 2022, was set to expire in 2026. He took over as Manchester United’s club captain from Harry Maguire in July 2023.
In a statement, Fernandes said, “Everybody knows the passion I have for Manchester United. I can see how positive the future is going to be and I am relishing leading this team forward.” He also stated, “I understand the responsibility and significance of wearing this shirt, and the levels of dedication and desire required to represent this incredible club.”
Despite facing criticism from former United players Gary Neville and Roy Keane, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has continued to support Fernandes. Fernandes noted that he “wouldn't have signed this contract” if he did not believe his “best moments in a United shirt are still to come.”
Fernandes reflected on his time at the club, mentioning key moments such as scoring a hat-trick against Leeds and leading the team at Old Trafford during European nights. He expressed confidence in the club’s future, saying, “From my discussions with the football leadership and manager, it is clear how determined everyone is to fight for major trophies in the years ahead.”
Fernandes was not listed among the ‘untouchables’ for potential summer transfers. A sale would have required an offer deemed too good to refuse, which did not materialize. Before the FA Cup final in May, Fernandes had voiced a desire for his personal expectations to align with those of the club.
Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth described Fernandes as a “brilliant leader” who has consistently performed at a high level. Ashworth commented, “Bruno has performed at such a high level with remarkable consistency since he arrived at Manchester United. Bruno's dedication to the club epitomises what it takes to be a United player. He remains pivotal to everything that we want to achieve here, and we look forward to working together to deliver the success that this club demands.”
