Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has officially agreed to join Atletico Madrid following the acceptance of a £33 million offer from the Spanish club last week.
Despite initial concerns regarding Gallagher's interest in the transfer, the 24-year-old informed Atletico officials on Sunday night that he is ready to make the move.
Gallagher, a product of Chelsea's academy, is now anticipated to travel to Spain to complete his medical examination and sign his contract, marking the end of his 18-year association with Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had proposed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year; however, Gallagher found the terms unsatisfactory due to both the contract's duration and the limited role he was offered within the squad.
A disconnect had developed between Gallagher and Chelsea, as he was perceived to be a poor match for the possession-based style favored by new manager Enzo Maresca. Consequently, he would likely not be a regular starter under the Italian.
Having played five matches in Euro 2024, Gallagher is approaching the final year of his current deal with Chelsea. The club opted to sell him abroad rather than to a rival in the English league, facilitating a favorable deal for Atletico.
