Roma experienced a historic defeat at home against Empoli on Sunday, marking the first time they have ever lost to the Tuscan side at their home ground.
Paulo Dybala's continued presence in the Italian capital was expected to boost Daniele De Rossi's squad, but instead, they succumbed to a surprising 2-1 loss after a lackluster performance.
Empoli's Emmanuel Gyasi opened the scoring with a tap-in just before half-time, and Lorenzo Colombo doubled their lead with a penalty in the 61st minute. Roma managed to pull one back through Eldor Shomurodov in the 80th minute but failed to complete the comeback.
Dybala, whose proposed transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadsiah fell through on Thursday, was one of three Roma players to hit the woodwork during the match, along with Lorenzo Pellegrini and Gianluca Mancini.
Roma faced the frustration of their home crowd, who expressed their displeasure as the team fell behind by two goals against a side expected to battle relegation this season.
"We were lacking energy and intensity... We played well in the second half, but it wasn't enough, and if you don't play well in the first half, things aren't going to go well for you," De Rossi told Sky Sport.
Roma will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to face Juventus away next weekend.
Adams Shines for Torino in Win Over Atalanta
Earlier on Sunday, Che Adams made a significant impact for Torino, scoring the decisive goal in their 2-1 victory over Atalanta. The Scotland international’s performance delighted fans, who had staged mass protests before the match, demanding that owner Urbano Cairo sell the club.
Adams, who joined Torino as a free agent last month, netted his first goal for the club four minutes after half-time, becoming the first Scottish player to score for Torino since Denis Law in the 1961/62 season. His goal followed a saved attempt by Atalanta's Duvan Zapata, ensuring a perfect home debut for the 28-year-old.
In addition to his goal, Adams provided the assist for Ivan Ilic's equalizer in the 31st minute, contributing to a well-rounded performance. Torino secured their second win of the season, with Vanja Milinkovic-Savic saving a penalty from Mario Pasalic deep into stoppage time.
Torino now sits on four points from their first two matches of the season, as the club's supporters continue to push for a change in ownership after 19 years under Cairo’s leadership.
