France defender Raphael Varane has signed with Serie A club Como, who have recently secured promotion to Italy's top flight. The 31-year-old Varane was a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Manchester United this summer.
Varane has agreed to a two-year contract with Como. His career includes winning three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies during his tenure at Real Madrid, in addition to a three-year stint at Manchester United. He also earned 93 caps for the French national team before retiring from international football last year.
Como, who are returning to Serie A after a 21-year absence, appointed former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas as their head coach after achieving promotion.
"I will meet Cesc again, but this time not as an opponent," Varane said. "I am very happy, I really like his playing philosophy and his passion for football."
